Water
Today we get to split water!
Here are the supplies you will need.
Hydrogen and oxygen
Directions:
Safety: Always Wear Your Goggles
1. Gather your materials.
Work with a friend or parent for this experiment. (remember you can always work with another person in our class)
2. Take your cup and fill it halfway with water. Measure one teaspoon of baking soda and stir it into water.
3. Next, use the wires, tape, and battery. Safety: Keep wires away from electrical outlet and water and use only a nine-volt battery! Now you are going toTape each end of the wires to the end of the battery. First find. the plus (+) sign on the battery? Next, find the minus sign (-) on the battery? Ok now tape one end of a wire on the"+" end. Now take the other wire and tape one end on the "-" end.
4. Next take the cup of water and baking soda and place the other ends of the wires into it. To be extra careful, you must tape the wires to opposite ends of the cup so that they do not touch.
5. Using your eyes, observe the wire ends that are in the water. Write down these observations in your Science Notebook.
6. Using your brain, predict what would happen if one wire was taken out of the water. Then test your prediction, and record results in your Science Notebook.
7. Water is made of the elements, Hydrogen and Oxygen. A water molecule has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. You get to find hydrogen and oxygen on our periodic tables.
8. Go to the PERIODIC TABLE (color) and find Hydrogen and Oxygen.
9. Record in your notes where in the video these elements were found.
10. Finally, go to the STAR PERIODIC TABLE to find and record the Element Symbol and Atomic Number of Hydrogen and Oxygen.

Congratulations! bring your science notebook to class so we can compare answers. Bring back your supplies!
